Dedicated to making a difference – caring for residents with dementia
Residents living in Charingfield’s Memory Support Household have developed beautifully strong bonds with staff and volunteers who go out of their way to create a home where they feel understood, valued and supported.
“At the heart of our approach is person-centred care, where every individual is seen, heard and valued for who they are,” says Manager, Laxmi. “We recognise that each resident living with dementia has a unique story, preferences and individual needs which guide how we deliver their care and support each day.”
A carefully selected team works together to meet the clinical and psychological needs of these residents and – equally importantly – their everyday routines and lifestyle preferences as well.
“These members have been chosen for their empathy, patience and understanding of dementia. Beyond their clinical skills, they bring heart, humour and genuine respect to every interaction, creating meaningful moments and nurturing a true sense of belonging for residents,” says Laxmi.
Dipa, a caring and passionate Personal Care Worker, has been at Charingfield for just over two years and prides herself on the relationships she builds with residents and their family.
“Every resident is different, and every day is different,” she says. “It’s important that we listen carefully and offer the physical, emotional or spiritual support they need.”
Dipa likes to gently support residents to remain independent where possible, assisting them to handle tasks they’re capable of completing. She also likes to encourage them to join in the social engagement and activities.
Just like at home, when it’s cold outdoors, the team turns on the fireplace, serves the residents hot chocolate and enjoys cosy chats. On warmer days, they open the windows and doors and encourage the residents to spend time in the gardens in the sunshine.
Dipa has undertaken specialised dementia training to equip her with the skills to better understand and care for the residents. “I’ve always been passionate about aged care, and especially love being able to make a positive impact on those residents with memory support needs,” she says.
The memory support household at Charingfield is dedicated to supporting individuals with dementia or memory support needs. The dedicated care area has been purposefully designed to feel warm, safe and homely. Every element – from lighting to layout – has been considered to support independence, orientation and wellbeing. And our special team provides the understanding, care and compassion that residents need to feel independent, safe and comfortable.
