Exploring Sydney’s famous landmarks
Dedicated volunteer, Steve, enjoys encouraging Charingfield residents to explore the iconic and fabulous sights around Sydney. Regularly, residents can be seen boarding their special bus eagerly looking forward to their next adventure.
With Steve and the Lifestyle Team’s help, the happy travellers have recently visited Watson’s Bay, The Rocks, Kirribilli and Luna Park, even stopping for tea with the Sydney Opera House and Harbour Bridge as a backdrop.
Lifestyle Coordinator, Bianca, says with Charingfield located in the heart of the Eastern beaches of Sydney, there’s no shortage of ideas for outings. “Many residents have lived in the local area all their lives, so they particularly love staying connected to their community and visiting favourite spots,” she says.
Steve started volunteering at Charingfield about 5 months ago and finds it very rewarding. “Our senior citizens need a strong support network. Driving the bus is my way of contributing,” he says. “I like to gently nudge the residents out of their comfort zones a little and encourage them to explore or try different things,” he adds with a smile.
At Charingfield, volunteers are an integral part of the family, and in this instance, it’s particularly true. Steve’s father-in-law, Albert, is a resident and loves the opportunity to spend time with his son-in-law. “I’m so glad I get to experience and share these wonderful outings with Steve,” says Albert.
Charingfield has several volunteers who generously share their time, energy and compassion to enhance the lives of residents. “From getting out and about to getting active or creative within the community, we are so grateful for all the volunteers who help ensure residents have access to familiar and new activities, adventures or companionship,” says Bianca.
