A lifelong love of literature lives on

There’s something special about the way a good story can transport us almost anywhere. For resident, Edith, and personal care worker, Sagar, it opened a door to a world of exciting memories.

Edith has a deep love of books and reading and spent most of her working life as a librarian. While she now listens, rather than reads, her enthusiasm for a good story remains as strong as ever.

Recognising her lifelong passion, personal care worker, Sagar, recently began spending time with Edith, reading aloud to her in the garden in the sunshine. It has become a meaningful ritual for the two of them. As the stories unfold, so too do the conversations about Edith’s life, her career in the library and the novels that left a lasting impression on her over the years.

“Books have always been such an important part of my life,” she says. “When Sagar reads to me, I close my eyes and it feels like I’m back in the library again.”

Sagar enjoys the interactions too. “It’s not just about reading a book,” he says. “I look forward to hearing her laugh at the characters and eagerly looking forward to the next chapter. And I love hearing her own stories – memories of her university days, her years among the bookshelves, and the novels that shaped her life.”

Manager, Laxmi, says these sessions highlight the importance of person-centred care. “Every resident has their own interests and passions and we love enabling these to continue at Charingfield. We go out of our way to get to know each individual, discover what their passions are and support them enjoy them.”
